Music at the Festival

Great music is one of the Festival’s hallmarks. Post-screening parties featuring live music by an array of artists, take place during the Festival at local restaurants and other venues starting at 10:30 PM. Post-screening parties are a great way to meet the filmmakers and discuss movies with fellow cinephiles, while supporting local live music.

Opening Night Party • Saturday, July 28th
Captain Kidd, 77 Water Street, Woods Hole

Clã Da Bossa Nova started in 2013 when Rayssa Ribeiro was introduced to Tad Price. Tad had been exploring Brazilian music for a few years, and Rayssa was born in Brazil. Her mother used to sing her the popular Brazilian tunes when she was young, and she knew them all by heart.

It was a natural fit, and after assembling a full band, including Susan Goldberg on bass, Mike Garvan on keyboards, and Michael Dunford on drums and percussion, they started playing around the Cape area. The Harvest Gallery Wine bar in Dennis has regularly featured the band for a number of years, and they have played at the Women’s Music festival at the Cape Playhouse and a number of Brazilian festivals, including hosting a festival at Cotuit Center for the Arts for two years.

Tuesday Night Party • Tuesday, July 30th
The 41-70, 71 Water Street, Woods Hole

Jordan Renzi has opened for Grammy winning artists Marc Cohn and Paula Cole, as well as Patty Larkin and Kate Taylor. She has played notable venues such as the Melody Tent (Hyannis, MA), Payomet Performing Arts Center (Truro, MA) and Tilden Arts Center (Barnstable, MA). Winning the grand prize for the Eventide Regional Songwriting Competition in 2017, and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) 2017 Fellowship in Performing Arts have led to a recent spike in local publicity and an audience waiting for her to take off. Jordan’s upcoming album “Waterman” will be released in summer 2019.

mvyradio presents Kim Richey • Thursday, August 1st
Woods Hole Community Hall, 68 Water Street, Woods Hole

Like many aspiring songwriters who move to Nashville, Kim Richey took a job at The Bluebird Café when she first came to town. Cooks, bartenders, hosts and servers; the venue boasts a long list of artists and songwriters who joined The Bluebird’s family over the years, drawn by its support of rising talent. Many, including touring singer/songwriter Richey, have gone on to make a name for themselves in their musical careers, yet still call The Bluebird home. Kim joins us this year for a special concert performance in advance of the documentary feature BLUEBIRD, which screens Saturday, August 3rd at 9 pm at Redfield Auditorium.

Friday Night Party • Saturday, August 2nd
Captain Kidd, 77 Water Street, Woods Hole

The Chandler Travis Three-O, like most things in life, started by mistake, as a result of Chandler having a hard time finding rooms large enough to house his nine-piece Chandler Travis Philharmonic. In 2009 or so, a couple of small, friendly bars opened on Cape Cod (the first being the Harvest Wine Gallery in Dennis) that asked Chandler about doing something with just another person or two, which wasn’t at all the direction he’d been going in.

These offers coincided happily with the arrivals in the Philharmonic of string bassist John Clark and jack of all trades (but especially saxophonist, keyboardist, and clarinetist) Berke McKelvey. Chandler had dabbled in smaller formats before, but in Clark and McKelvey he suddenly had two extremely talented and enthusiastic players who shared his passion for detailing, arranging, and rehearsing. Both played beautifully on his recent solo album, 2009’s well received “After She Left“, which turned out to be sort of a petri dish version of the live group to come, and with the frequent addition of vocalist and longtime supporter Fred Boak, aka The Valet (for what good is a Three-o with only three people?), the Three-o was born.

At least two unexpected surprises followed: it gradually became evident that the Three-o could play just about anything the full version of the band could play, once they put in the time to adjust the arrangements, plus a few things it couldn’t; and it immediately became evident that audiences responded to the tighter focus in a delightful way, clearly picking up on the songwriting, which has always been at the heart of the matter in all of Chandler’s bands, in a way they didn’t when confronted with all the many distinctive personalities and riotous pageantry of the full CTP or the hell-bent-on-filling-the-dance-floor high energy of his other band, the Incredible Casuals. The vast simplification seemed to engage people in a disarming and unassuming way, quieter and more direct. Lo and behold: it was dug!
