OF TERROR AT 5

An autobiographical film expressed through an abstract yet realistic insight
into the mind of a victim of molestation. Within the film she encounters
intense emotions that victims deal with in their lives, dealing with their

SCIENCE
IS FICTION: The Films of Jean Painlevé
Description: The
son of a French Prime Minister, Jean Painlevé (1902-1989) was a
man of myriad talents. Though considered a minor figure in cinematic history,
Painlevé was the director of more than two hundred science and nature
films and an early champion of the genre.
Advocating the credo
"science is fiction," Painlevé scandalized the scientific world
with a cinema designed to entertain as well as edify. He portrayed sea
horses, vampire bats, and fanworms as endowed with human traits - the erotic,
the comical, and the savage - and in the process won over the circle of
Surrealists and avant-gardists he befriended, among them the filmmakers
Sergei Eisenstein, Jean Vigo, and Luis Buñuel and attracting musical
scores by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Pierre Henry, and Darius Milhaud.
....a far cry from
the suave animal documentaries our screens are packed with, Painlevé
approaches his subjects with wit and an almost jubilant curiosity.
his films, totally devoid of any sentimentality, are an engagement of humanity
through animality.

by the MBL/WHOI Library and the WHFF Film Institute

THE
WINTER PEOPLE
Description:
Faced with the prospect of losing their family’s summer cottage in
a nasty
divorce settlement,
Mother Anne and daughter Sarah drive down to Cape Cod to close up the house
for the winter. Sarah heard rumors of spirits or "winter people"
who inhabit the beach houses during the off season. Anne dismisses
this but unmade beds and unrecognizable lipstick confirm Sarah’s suspicions.
Anne knows what she believes to be the truth and the pain of her husband’s
philandering comes rushing back. Both mother and daughter’s inklings
are confirmed as the story throws us into an intergenerational limbo, clarifying
once and for all the truth about the existence of the winter people and
opening the door to a world beyond the one we understand.
