TV Writers 2011
The Woods Hole Inn, in partnership with the Woods Hole Film Festival, announces the first annual "Television Writers Symposium" to be held in Woods Hole, Massachusetts from February 4 - 6, 2011 at the vintage-restored Woods Hole Inn.
The Symposium is designed to give participants a vivid introduction into the inner workings of a dramatic network television series. P.K. SIMONDS, Executive Producer and "showrunner" of GHOST WHISPERER, PARTY OF FIVE, and other dramas, will join LAURIE MCCARTHY, Executive Producer of GHOST WHISPERER, creator/showrunner of NBC's WINDFALL, and writer-producer of FELICITY, CSI MIAMI and many other shows, to walk participants through the drama behind the drama.
The symposium will focus on "hour-long" television, and examine the larger creative process through the prism of a specific storytelling crisis during the pre-production of a hit network show. Often ignored by east coast writers in favor of film, network and cable television writing is a huge and lucrative marketplace. "Local writers need guidance about how this part of the industry works," said Judy Laster of the Woods Hole Film Festival.
Simonds and McCarthy will deconstruct the process of writing and producing a single episode. Says Simonds, "I want to examine all the parameters from the writer's perspective. How does a writers room work? How are stories broken and seasons planned? Who is responsible for a single script? What happens when network executives throw out a months-in-the-writing script on the eve of production? How do the writers respond? What is the balance of power between the players? How are all-important "relationships" managed in the midst of conflict? Is it possible to do your job in Hollywood without selling your soul?"
Simonds and McCarthy will also discuss the role of the writer in television in contrast to film, as well as important first steps for breaking into the industry. Writers will network, share ideas and enjoy the stark beauty of Cape Cod in winter. "We are thrilled to be partnering with these experienced writer-producers" said Laster, "as a continuing demonstration of our efforts to provide unique and important opportunities in this wonderful location on a year-round basis."
